For the second time in 2002, the Czech Republic was the
destination for the Stowmarket TractorBoys. Following the incident packed 4
day tour to Prague in April, we returned to Prague again. Our final
destination was the town of Liberec, which lies about 100km north of Prague.
It is home to FC Sloven Liberec, the Czech Champions and opponents of the
TractorBoys in the 2nd Round of the UEFA Cup.
A 50 seater coach was chartered for the journey from Prague
to Liberec which was packed with very excited Stowmarket TractorBoys and
some exclusively selected friends and associates from places such as
Debenham, Felixstowe, London and the North West Supporters Branch.
Unfortunately, the game couldn't match the levels of
entertainment in the stands as our flag was at one point stolen by the
Liberec hooligans only for the Czech police to go and retrieve it, for which
we are very grateful. However, the people in charge need to get a bit of a
slap for their "SportOps Tours" like efforts when they gave us extra tickets
for the match and then failed to enforce any segregation of supporters.
Anyway, along with paying 60p a pint before the game (and
that was after the landlord put prices up by 50%), it all made for another
interesting venture into Europe. Sadly though, the game was lost on
penalties and the way things are going now, it could be a long time before
we get to go on another UEFA Cup away trip.
