South Africa v England
Durban, May 2003

Eventually, we got inside the stadium and almost missed Gareth Southgate scoring after less than a minute. Just as well we saw the goal because we'd never have believed anyone who told us he'd scored. Later things got even more strange when Emile Heskey scored as well.

ABSA Stadium

Looks like we're in the right place

Flags Everywhere

Not sure what happened here but we ended up with a South African flag for the Battle Bus (which was later lost)

Good Organisation

We even manage to end up in the right part of the stadium

First View Of The Pitch

We find our seats and the players are already warming up

Where Can We Hang Our Flag?

Looks like there is some space on the tier below, so we throw our flag down and ask the supporters to hang it up.

No Room Up Here

As you can see, there isn't much room up here

Or Over There

An unexpected gift

After a while, the supporters downstairs, return our flag which was wrapped around some beer

Still Warming Up

While we enjoy our beer, the players are still warming up

Visitors Section

Finally, a place to hang our flag

Although it's not very visable on TV

Giant Screen

David Beckham gets ready to lead the team out

National Anthem

The words to the South African national anthemn are displayed to the stadium.

Final Whistle

At the end of the game, England have won 2-1 with goals from Gareth Southgate and Emile Heskey (no, honestly, they did both score). The players all get medals and a big trophy
